CommuteSmart’s goal is to reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality by decreasing the number of single-occupancy vehicles on the road. We encourage individuals to take an alternative commute to work. We define an alternative commute as walking, biking, taking the bus, carpooling to work, and working from home (teleworking).

To qualify to receive incentives from CommuteSmart, you must live or work in Jefferson or Shelby county and be actively taking a clean commute to work.

Get Started

Go to www.commutesmart.org/birmingham and create your profile. Once you have created your profile, you will receive an activation email with a link to confirm your profile.

After you have created your profile, you can start logging your alternative commutes to work. Remember to only log for those days that you take an alternative commute to work. You do not have to log for the days you are not taking an alternative commute.

Incentive Programs

GETGREEN

  • One-time, 90 day program

  • Starts the moment you begin logging your alternative commutes

  • Receive a $1 per day for every day you log an alternative commute (max $70.00)

  • Must log a minimum 20 alternative commutes during your first 90 day period

COMMUTERCLUB

  • Automatically starts after your finish your GetGreen period and continue to log your alternative commutes

  • To qualify for an incentive, you must log a minimum of 20 alternative commutes every 90 days during each quarter: Jan 1-Mar 31, Apr 1-Jun 30, Jul 1-Sept 30, and Oct 1-Dec 31

Emergency Ride Home Benefit

CommuteSmart also has an Emergency Ride Home benefit which helps ease the fear of getting home from work. In order to qualify, you must be an active CommuteSmart member who has logged one alternative commute in the past 30 days or be an active member of a CommuteSmart vanpool. Just call 1-87-RIDEMATCH and we will arrange for the best way to get you home. Qualifying reasons are unexpected overtime, carpool partner emergency or personal emergency.
