Carpooling

More likely than not, you have a friend, relative or co-worker who lives and works near you. Sharing the ride saves money, reduces wear and tear on your car, and lets you arrive at work feeling less stressed and ready to start the day.

Not sure if you have a friend near you? Check out the CommuteSmart free online ridematching database. Our online database uses a person’s home address, work address and work hours to match commuters willing to share their commute. Information is secure and will not be used for any other purpose. You’re not obligated to anything by signing up. Give it a try!

Vanpooling

Share the ride with a group and save even more! A commuter vanpool is a group of 7 to 15 people who ride to and from work each day in a comfortable passenger van. The cost of vanpooling varies from van to van, but the more riders you have, the less you pay! A CommuteSmart representative can provide information on existing vanpools and let you know if you are eligible for a vanpool subsidy. Find and join a vanpool here!

Walking

Assuming your distance from home to work allows for it, walking to work is the most inexpensive form of transportation.

Reduce your stress from work by walking and you may just come up with your next best creative work idea while walking to work!

Biking

Biking is not just about staying fit.  It is also a very efficient way to and from work!

Every May, CommuteSmart Birmingham participates in National Bike to Work Day. Throughout America, cyclists will participate in this annual initiative by conducting various activities that highlight the benefits of cycling. Annually, our goal is to continue encouraging people to bike to work as well as CELEBRATING those who already do!

Transit

Save money, sit back and relax while someone else does the driving.

Transit can save you money on gas, car maintenance and parking fees. Even if you can't use transit for commuting, consider using it for business meetings, errands and non-commute travel.

Some employers may also be eligible to purchase Metro Area Express (MAX) passes at a discount. Ask your employer if subsidies are available for transit passes and take a look at BJCTA's Web site for maps and fares.

Learn more at the Birmingham Jefferson County Transit Authority's website.
